I was diagnosed with MS in 1995, and was serving in the Defence Medical Forces in 2012 when I was transferred under the care of ‘Matt’, who was then working in Frimley Park Hospital.
In the 17 years before I met Matt, I’d ever come across one healthcare practitioner with Matt’s authenticity, emotional intelligence, kindness, and warmth (Richard Merry).
In my experience, the ‘bond’ between patient and consultant is critical, and I’ve previously ended my relationship with other consultants who treated me more as another statistic than a person.
I only heard about Matt’s tragic death today, when visiting my MS Nurse.
I’m so sorry to learn of his passing, and would like to convey my deepest sympathy to his wife and family.
Matt was an exceptional human being, and his untimely death perfectly illustrates the fragility and unfairness of life.
Rest in Peace my friend and thank you for all your support and kindness.
